Why commercial lines acquisition takes longer, and pays more

Business owners buy differently. The system has to be designed for it.

Commercial insurance prospects rarely buy on the first conversation. Renewals are fixed, decisions involve more than one person and the policy is often bundled with others. Acquisition built for personal lines speed tends to disappoint here.

Design for the renewal date

The single most useful qualifying question in commercial lines is when the current policy renews. A prospect six months out is not a cold lead. They are a scheduled opportunity, and the system should treat them as one.

Qualify by fit, not just interest

Industry, headcount, revenue band and lines of coverage tell a producer whether the account fits the agency’s appetite before anyone picks up the phone. Asking these early protects producer time for the accounts worth writing.

In commercial lines, patience is a system, not a virtue.

Nurture for the long cycle

Automated, relevant follow-up keeps the agency present until the renewal window opens. When it does, the producer calls a prospect who already knows them. Fewer opportunities, worked properly, produce larger and longer-lasting accounts.
